11.3.5 Summary

CoPs are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly. Not everything called a community is a community of practice. It has three main characteristics: Domain, community and practice. It has lots of application in many environments - particularly the business environment which can gain advantage by developing and maintaining CoP. Fifteen steps highlight the actions which must be followed for the successful implementation of a community of practice.

After reading the “communities of practice” component you should be able to define what communities of practice are, describe their key characteristics and establish a community of practice following the 15 tips given above. You should also find it feasible to recognize the value and benefits of communities of practice.
