After reading this component you will have acquired a basic knowledge of what an Intellectual Property strategy (IP strategy) is, what are it’s main elements and how important is for every business organisation. You will also be able to identify basic guidelines and tips to follow in order to develop an IP strategy and some specific types of IP policies. The time required to read this component is approximately 40 minutes.


Each organisation has different goals and therefore strategies must be formulated in a customised way to facilitate the achievement of these particular goals. The importance of IP in creating and sustaining a competitive advantage depends on the sector of activity, its overall business strategy and how it interacts with the strategies of its competitors.
Therefore, there is no “optimum” IP strategy. An IP strategy may vary from organisation to organisation as mentioned before while the IP cost factor plays an important role. Large enterprises that have significant financial resources often pursue a strategy of procuring and maintaining a large quantity of patents. In contrast, for most start-up companies, developing and building a comprehensive patent portfolio can be prohibitively expensive.1
